Where Switzerland, France and Italy meet
The skyline above Vichères reveals one of the most dramatic horizons in the Alps. I took this photo on a crisp clear January morning straight after fresh snowfall. I was torn between skiing the fresh powder of photographing the most magical view. Mont Dolent rising on the left like a pyramid marks a special meeting point of Switzerland, France, and Italy. To its right, the Aiguille du Chardonnet and the Aiguille d’Argentière are included in some of my most photographed mountains. When the first light hit in the morning, I was both excited about the light and relieved that the air was becoming easier for my hands to work the camera.
I’ve hiked the ridge in Vicheres a good few times in summer and seeing it in winter is so breathtaking. The fresh snow transforms this entire massif with every ridge, couloir, and folded layer of granite becoming outlined with such incredible clarity in the crystal clear winter air.
This photograph is part of my long-term archive of the glaciers and peaks of the Valais Alps. My aim is not to dramatise but simply to observe and to show the mountains in the moments where their true character appears. Mont Dolent and the Argentière chain, bathed in new snow and winter light, remind me that some of the most powerful alpine scenes are also the most peaceful.
