The Devils Jaw, Senya
The Okshornan peaks on Senja rise from the Norwegian Sea like a row of ancient blades, sharp, sculpted, and steep. Locals call them Djevelens Tanngard, “The Devil’s Teeth,” a name that captures their fierce geometry but not their quiet presence. We were ski touring up to the top of a steep ridge when the Devil’s teeth became visible. In the silence it was even more impressive.
The weather was changing fast and we knew that we had to get down quickly. But I couldn’t miss capturing this amazing place where the mountains meet the ocean. The deep dark water washing violently against their base, whilst the snow clings to the ridges in thin, bright lines that reveal every fold and fracture. Every so often the sun broke through the clouds and the light swept across the peaks in brief, golden moments.
What I love most about this place is that’s it’s dramatic but at the same time profoundly peaceful. The rhythm of the waves softens the sharpness of the rock, the winter clouds wrap the peaks in colour, and the whole landscape feels suspended between sea and sky. It’s one of the most beautiful places that I have photographed.
