Lac du Fenêtre stillness
Reaching Lac du Fenêtre from the Italian side is one of those rare hikes where the reward arrives all at once. The path rises steadily through a breathtaking quiet valley, until suddenly the lake and the awe inspiring panorama reveals itself: a still alpine lake set perfectly beneath the skyline of the Mont Blanc massif. I always plan this hike on a clear day when there is little to no wind speed. The result a flawless mirror, reflecting Mont Blanc, the Aiguille Verte, Chardonnet, Argentière and the jagged ridges between them with almost impossible clarity. It’s a moment where the mountains seem to exist twice in the world above and in the stillness below.
I’ve walked this trail many times from both sides, and each time, I’m surprised by it’s sheer beauty. The light changes, the colours shift, and the reflection appears and disappears with the slightest breath of wind. Every visit feels like a new discovery. For me, this lake is a reminder of why I love photographing the mountains: not to chase drama, but to catch those rare, peaceful moments when the landscape shows itself exactly as it is.
